Some countries will just let you in and put a visa stamp in your passport; others may want to see that you actually plan to leave (onward/return flight ticket) or may want to see that you have a certain amount of funds available to cover your stay.
The United States require a prior online travel authorization (ESTA) to be obtained free of charge. Others issue a visa on arrival which is just a sticker in the passport but it involves a fee to be paid (Egypt, Turkey). Some countries require you to get a formal visa on arrival which requires an application, to provide photographs, and may be to wait several hours/days until the visa is approved by the government of the country. Others however like Brazil, China, India, Russia, and most of African and Asian countries require you to obtain a visa through their Embassies/Consulates prior to travel.
