The newest places to see movies in Brisbane An artist's impression of the proposed Palace Cinemas at the new Petrie Terrace Barracks development. The newest places to catch a flick this summer in Brisbane, and cinemas gone dark.
New cinemasPalace Cinemas at the BarracksInner city movie fans will look forward to the opening of a new six screen cinema complex at the new Petrie Terrace Barracks development. The building is still under construction but by the last week in November you could be sitting in Brisbane's newest cinema complex and enjoying one of the arthouse, world or classic films the Palace is known for.
The Schonell CinemaThe Schonell Cinema at the University of Queensland in St Lucia reopened 17 October. It was closed in 2006 but the 180 seat cinema 2 (with big leather seats) is screening movies again. Hooray! Session times are limited to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at the moment but the good news is that ticket prices are the same they were in 2006. The cinema will be closed for a short 2 week break over Christmas (19 December - 5 January) and then back with more in 2009.
Limes Rooftop cinema This is a sophisticated, intimate movie experience. Each Monday and Tuesday night watch a film amongst the city lights of Fortitude Valley, on the roof of Brisbane's boutique hotel, Limes.
There's a bar at the outdoor rooftop venue and you are welcome to buy a drink before, during or after the screening. Sounds fun. Pre-bookings are recommended as movies such as St Elmo's Fire will be popular with the 1980s movie loving crowd.
Outdoor cinema Outdoor cinema is starting again over summer. Moonlight Cinema is in the grounds of the Powerhouse at New Farm but you need to buy your tickets directly from Moonlight Cinema. The program launches and first tickets go on sale from 3 November 2008. Screenings begin 15 December and last all summer long (until 10 March to be exact).
Free cinema Don't forget GoMA's Australian Cinémathèque for foreign, cult and historical films. They're always free.
Cinema screens gone darkDendy on George Street is closing at some stage before their lease expires at the end of this year. It will be sad day for Brisbane movie fans as screenings began here with silent movies in 1910. It closed briefly in 1964 and reopened 1965. It got a makeover to become a two screen cinema in the 1990s when it was bought by Dendy.
And unfortunately, Brisbane City Council's Movie in the Parks program isn't operating this summer season.
And this isn't breaking news but in case you didn't know, the Birch Carroll and Coyle cinemas closed at Toombul in June this year.
